Business Taxes in Nashville: The Honest Guide

Nashville runs on Tennessee's business tax, and the license itself is almost an afterthought: $15 to Davidson County, plus $15 to the city if you are inside Nashville city limits. What actually matters is your gross receipts. Tennessee sorts every business into one of three bands, and the band decides whether you file nothing, renew a $15 license, or pay a percentage tax on everything you take in.

What Nashville actually charges businesses

ItemCurrent amountWho pays it
Business tax license, county$15 one-timeEvery business in Davidson County at or above $3,000 in receipts
Business tax license, city$15 one-timeBusinesses inside Nashville city limits (the Urban Service District)
Minimal activity license$15 a year per jurisdictionBusinesses with $3,000 to $99,999 in gross receipts
Business tax0.025% to 0.1875% of gross receipts, $22 minimumBusinesses at $100,000+ in receipts, by classification

The three bands

Under $3,000: no license, no tax. Tennessee leaves the smallest side businesses alone entirely.

$3,000 to $99,999: you hold a minimal activity license. It costs $15 a year per jurisdiction, so $30 a year inside city limits and $15 in the county only. There is no tax return to file in this band.

$100,000 and up: you hold a standard license and file an annual business tax return with the Tennessee Department of Revenue. The tax is your gross receipts times your classification rate, with a $22 minimum per location. Paying the tax renews the license.

What that looks like in real numbers

  • Restaurant inside city limits, $250,000 in receipts: Class 2 tax of $375 + $30 license issuance = $405 the first year, then $375 a year.
  • Consultant in the county only, $60,000 in receipts: minimal activity band, $15 a year flat, no return to file.
  • Contractor inside city limits, $500,000 in receipts: Class 4 tax of $500 + $30 issuance = $530 the first year, then $500 a year.
  • Side business, $2,400 in receipts: $0. No license and no tax under $3,000.

Who is exempt

Professional services are generally exempt from the Tennessee business tax: medical, veterinary, legal, accounting, architectural, engineering, educational, financial, and insurance services, along with religious, charitable, and nonprofit activity. If part of your business is exempt and part is not, the county clerk can confirm how the split is treated.

Two things downtown businesses miss

The Central Business Improvement District adds a 0.50% fee on certain retail sales downtown, collected separately from the business tax, and its boundaries expanded in 2026 with another expansion set for January 1, 2027. Separately, many new businesses also need a zoning verification or use-and-occupancy permit from Metro Codes before opening, which is a different office from the county clerk.

Frequently asked questions

How much is a business license in Nashville?
The license itself is $15 to the county, plus $15 to the city if you are inside Nashville city limits, so $30 total for most Nashville businesses. What you owe after that depends on your gross receipts: nothing under $3,000, a $15 per jurisdiction minimal activity license from $3,000 to $99,999, and a gross receipts tax by classification at $100,000 and up.

Do I need a license if I make less than $3,000?
No. Under $3,000 in gross receipts, Tennessee does not require a business tax license and no business tax is due. Other permits, like zoning or a state professional license, can still apply.

What is the minimal activity license?
If your gross receipts are between $3,000 and $99,999, you hold a minimal activity license instead of a standard one: $15 a year per jurisdiction, renewed with the Davidson County Clerk, and no business tax return to file.

When is the Tennessee business tax due?
The annual return is due the 15th day of the 4th month after your fiscal year ends, which is April 15 for calendar-year businesses. Filing is electronic, and paying the tax renews the standard license.

Which businesses are exempt from the Tennessee business tax?
Professional services including medical, veterinary, legal, accounting, architectural, engineering, educational, financial, and insurance services are generally exempt, along with religious, charitable, and nonprofit activity. If your business mixes exempt and taxable activity, confirm the split with the county clerk.
